We absolutely love visiting the Bahamas! Specifically going to Spanish Wells and Russell Island. The two islands are located west of the northern tip of Eleuthera and are linked together by a small bridge. There is no airport on Spanish Wells or Russell Island so you fly to North Eleuthera, take a taxi to the ferry and then it’s a short 10 minute ferry ride over to the islands. Below are a few of the reasons why we will keep returning time and time again!
Size of the Islands!
Spanish Wells is about 2 miles long and a half mile wide. Russell Island is about 3 miles long. I love that they are so small, it feels so charming and sweet. You don’t even rent a car there, you rent a golf cart, how great is that?
For an island that doesn’t have a huge tourist industry there is a ton of options for beach houses for rent! We stay at Stillwaters on Russell Island and we absolutely love it! The house is beautiful, the landscape is full of flowers and fruit trees, it’s secluded, is right on the water and has a private dock. We also rent a boat and a golf cart for our entire stay.
The Sparkling Water!
The beautiful, clear, turquoise water is scenery that I never get tired of looking at.
Jumping off the bridge!
This is one of Bo and Tyson’s favorite things; Jumping from the bridge that links Spanish Wells to Russell Island!
Laid Back Attitudes!
When you think of island life, what comes to mind? For me it’s relaxation, slow pace and happy people! This is exactly what these islands offer. Every person that we have met have been wonderful to us, you leave feeling like you were not just a guest of the island but are now part of the island family.
The Great Food!
The hardest thing about dinner time is choosing where to go! The Sandbar, The Shipyard, Wreckers and Buddas Snack Shack all have amazing food and completely awesome staff!!
Never knowing what you are going to see in the water!
Of course you will see tons of colorful tropical fish every time that you enter the water. The things we found the most intriguing were the stingrays, grouper, hogfish, porcupinefish, barracuda, parrotfish, cowfish, lionfish, crabs, starfish, eels, trumpetfish, conch and lobsters! Absolutely nothing can beat our times of seeing and being in the water with manatees! What I don’t like seeing in the water? SHARKS! And we see them all the time!! Eek.
We go spearfishing almost every single day while we are in the Bahamas; It is SO much fun! In the Bahamas you can use what is called a sling spear, nothing with a trigger. Nothing is better than trying to spear your dinner straight from the ocean! We have speared multiple kinds of parrotfish, tons of spiny lobster and even some lionfish and they all tasted great!
So many deserted islands to discover!
The ocean around Spanish Wells is scattered with deserted islands and they are so fun to explore. Some of the islands that seem deserted are actually personally owned they just don’t have any structures built on them yet; You may be ran off, but we never had that problem.
Finding private beaches!
With all the islands big and small around you can always find an amazing beach to have all to yourself!
Of course we can’t leave out snorkeling, it’s something we are doing constantly in the Bahamas! The shallow water is crystal clear, the deeper you get the more murky and clouded the water becomes. Surprisingly the corals and reefs in this area are not bright and vibrant colors, but it’s still beautiful and the fish make up for it!
This is my favorite thing to experience; We make it a point to go during every trip! Every day when the tide goes down a huge white sandbar emerges from the ocean and it is absolutely beautiful!! We pull the boat right up to the sandbar and go exploring; we find sand dollars, sea biscuits, sea cucumbers, conchs and so much more!
